This online Level 3 Anatomy and Physiology course takes you through the structure and function of the body system by system, with the detail an aesthetic practitioner actually needs. You work through it in your own time, on any device.

Part 1: Structural organisation and the muscular system

• The six levels of structural organisation, from chemical to organism

• Muscle tone, muscle fatigue, muscle types and their actions

• Muscular tissue, upper limb and lower limb muscles

• Actions of the major muscles of the head and neck

• The tongue: structure, surface, nerve supply, micro-anatomy and function

• Actions of the major muscles of the back and shoulders

 

Part 2: The circulatory and lymphatic systems

• Blood circulation and the arteries of the thorax

• Functions of the blood, and venous drainage from the head and neck

• Lymphatic capillaries, vessels, nodes and ducts

• Functions of the lymphatic system, and the spleen

 

Part 3: The nervous and endocrine systems

• Central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems

• The brain and spinal cord: cerebrum, cerebellum, medulla oblongata, pons, thalamus and hypothalamus

• Sensory, motor and association neurons

• The olfactory system

• The endocrine system

 

Part 4: The skeletal system

• Bone shapes and the bones of the skull

• The vertebrae of the spine, neck, mid-spine and lower back

• Main postural faults of the spine

• Bones of the pelvic girdle and the hip joint

• Bones of the shoulders, upper arm, arm and hand

• Bones of the leg and foot

 

Part 5: The digestive system

• How food is broken down and absorbed along the alimentary canal

• The role of the digestive system in energy, repair and growth

 

Part 6: The skin

• Skin structure: epidermis, germinative zone, dermis and subcutaneous layer

• Adipose tissue and the appendages of the skin

• Hormones, blood flow and the functions of the skin

 

WHO IT IS FOR

 

The course suits anyone moving into aesthetics who needs to build their underpinning anatomy knowledge, and existing practitioners who want to refresh it. There is no entry requirement and no time limit: you work through the six parts at whatever pace suits you.
